On a cellular level, photobiomodulation (PBM) works to stimulate the mitochondria. Similar to when we eat food, light is a stimulus. Depending on the light wave, the body metabolizes that stimulus in various ways. When appropriately dosed, the mitochondria take that light and turn it into chemical energy, called ATP. Because of this mechanism, light therapy is becoming increasingly popular as we understand more of its biologic properties…showing large potential in the adjunctive treatment of depression, chronic pain and inflammation.
